Spinal Cord Injury Facts


In every 49 minutes, an American sustains a traumatic spinal cord injury. Only half of those with spinal cord injuries have health insurance at the time of their injury and the average expenses incurred in the first year after an injury are $329,000.

Here are a few other facts for you to consider:

  • Number of new spinal cord injuries per year: 11,000
  • First year expenses for paraplegics: $209,074
  • First year expenses for quadriplegics: $470,833
  • Percentage of people with SCI unemployed ten years after injury: 56.3%

Average cost of a van that accommodates a quadriplegic: $45,000

Average cost of a lift to transfer a quadriplegic from bed to wheelchair: $9,500

Average cost of modifying a home into a wheelchair accessible living environment: $175,000.
